Stories from the Railroad

Long ago in 1881 at about 11 p.m a violent storm was flooding the river and creeks near Honey Creek. The Railroad sent out a pusher train to be sure the storm did not wash out any track. The train was passing the Shelley family home. Then suddenly the family hears a crashing noise. 15-year-old Kate Shelly ran out the house to investigate what the crashing noise was. She saw that the Honey Creek Bridge collapsed when the switcher train went over the bridge. She ran over to the bridge and sees 4 men trapped in the train as it sinks into the creek. There was a nearby trestle with a catwalk. Kate crawled across the catwalk and suddenly she hears a crack. She thinks she would fall into the creek but she hurries over and makes it just fine. She sprints to the Moingona Station and quickly warned the station agent about the disaster just as the midnight express approaches.  The station agent quickly runs out with a red light and holds it high as he stands on the tracks warning the express to stop. The express saw the red light and quickly stopped. Once the express was fully stopped Kate led a rescue train to save two of the four men from the pusher train struggling for dear life. Thanks to the Bravery of Kate Shelley only two lives were lost.
